Touch ‘Em All – Labor Day, 2009
by PTownFan
Enjoy Labor Day PTown. If you’re looking for a little baseball today, the internet radio is full of good stuff … the streaking Reds take on the NL Wild Card leading Rockies today while Brad Penny goes for another Giants win against the last place Padres. Go Reds! Tommy Time could use a little love to help bust a big River Cats skid. And hopefully, Konrad Schmidt will get another chance to impress the Diamondbacks brass in the Reno Aces’ season finale. Gonna make my Labor Day projects a lot more fun, that’s for sure!
JONNY GOMES (OF, Cincinnati Reds, MLB – Casa Grande HS):
1-for-4 with a single and two K’s in yesterday’s extra innings win over Atlanta. That’s two series sweeps in a row for the streaking Reds who have won 7 straight. And the Braves are no cellar dwellers. There was quite a dramatic end to the game as Micah Owings came on to pitch a a scoreless 10th and 11th inning for the Reds and then was hit in the head on a 0-1 pitch with the bases loaded. He went down hard and ended up with stitches near his ear, but appears to have come out of the ordeal shaken, but not stirred. Happened at a tricky time of day as the shadows were crossing home plate. The HBP walked in the go ahead run and Corky Miller added an insurance run with a sac fly. The Reds are now just three games back of Houston and Milwaukee and head to Coors Field for a 4 game set against the Rockies. Giants fans better tune in and channel some PTown power into the Reds bats. They could really help our Wild Card bid by keeping this streak alive.
TOMMY EVERIDGE (1B, AAA Sacramento Rivercats, Oakland Athletics Organization – Sonoma HS):
Did not play for a second night in a row as the Cat’s mini-skid has evolved into a full blown 6 game losing streak, cutting their Division lead in half. The Salt Lake Bees swarmed again last night, winning 13-3. Tommy is hitless in his last 8 ABs so let’s hope he and the Cats turn it around today at 1pm when Sacramento and Salt Lake City wrap up the regular season. The Bees are playing for pride and the Cats just need to get back on track for the playoffs.
LOUIS OTT (IF/DH, Advanced A Jupiter Hammerheads, Florida Marlins Organization – Casa Grande HS):
Lou had an RBI single in the second game of yesterday’s doubleheader against Fort Meyers. Jupiter won both games to wrap up their season with a 4th place second half finish.
KONRAD SCHMIDT (C, High A Visalia Rawhide, Arizona Diamondbacks Organization – Petaluma HS):
Didn’t play in yesterday’s win over Fresno, but maybe Kon will help Reno take 7 straight in today’s season finale at 1:05.
STEVE PEARSON (1B, Wichita Wingnuts, IND – Casa Grande HS):
The Lincoln Salt Dogs, second half champs, spoiled the post-season plans of the first half and overall season winning Wichita Wingnuts . The Salt Dogs took the Nuts 6-1 yesterday to move on and end Wichita’s season. Steve contributed a base hit.
BRANDON MORROW (P, Seattle Mariners, MLB – Rancho Cotate HS):
Morrow lasted only 4 innings and took the loss yesterday as the Colorado Sky Sox got to him early. He gave up 3 hits and an earned run but fanned 6. Today’s season finale in Tacoma will determine the Division Champion who will face Sacramento in the first round. Morrow, however will be pitching for the Mariners again, taking Luke French’s spot in the rotation on Friday and giving PTown Fan a third PTown Pro to follow for the last month of baseball season
Not too bad for a small town, huh?
Touching base with PTown’s baseball pros… and other things that make her crow.
